Redesigning the information hierarchy of a location manager for samples
Project Context
Scope
The scope of this design challenge was to completely redesign the UI of the location manager, while making minimal changes to the backend. The goal of this project was to make the information hierarchy more intuitive, by more closely mimicking the physical lab space in which our users would be storing their samples.
What was my role?
This project was completed on my own, with support and feedback from my design mentor (the founding designer) at Scispot.
First, let's take a look at current designs
Lacks spacing between items
Too many levels of collapsing/expanding makes it difficult to see root locations once they are all expanded
Colours for tags lack contrast (inaccessible)
Difficult to use star, delete, and add buttons on the right hand side because users cannot tell which row they are associated with
"Create new root location" CTA simply creates new untitled root location in the directory, users must then manually rename and edit it
Rows lack dividers, so become hard to read from left to right
Now here are the redesigns!

Create new root location
Create new freezer
